新潟聾学校で口話教育を受け、手話は寄宿舎生活の中で覚えました。東邦歯科技工専門学校を卒業後、28年間歯科技工士として勤務していました。58歳の時に脳梗塞を起こし、それ以来片手手話を使うようになり、現在は、瀬谷区聴覚障害者協会の会長を務めています。

I received oral education at Niigata School for the Deaf, and at the same time, learned sign language living with other students in the school dormitory. After graduating from Toho Dental Technical College, I worked as a dental technician for 28 years. At the age of 58, I had a stroke and my left side has been pralized. I have been using a one-handed sign language since for communication. I am currently the president of the Seya Ward Hearing Impaired Association.

私が学校に通っていた頃は「口話」が主流。小学生の時から寮生活だった私は、教室の外では仲間たちと理解ある寮母さんのもとで、手話で意思疎通しありのままの自分でのびのび育った。社会人となってから同窓会会報に「手話で教育を」という内容を投稿して結構批判された。そんな時代を経てきた。私は手話言語を使った表現方法しか持ち合わせていない。 自分が一番安心して使える言語。それを否定されることは私を否定されること。他のどんな人にとっても同じだと振り返ってつくづく思う。
When I was in school, is was commonplace to use “oral communication”. I was living in a dormitory since elementary school and grew up at ease, communicating with my friends outside of the classroom through the dorm mother, who was able to understand sign language. After I started working, I submitted “Education through Sign Language” in the Alumni Association Bulletin and received quite a bit of criticism. Those were the times I was living through. The only way to express myself is through sign language. It is the language I feel most comfortable using. To be denied it is to deny me. Looking back, I deeply think that it is the same for everyone.
