音声言語と手話言語。どちらも言語だけれど、使うシグナルが違う。状況によって、使いやすかったり使いにくかったり。両方使えて使い分けられると便利だね。

Spoken language and sign language. They are both languages, but they use different types of signals to communicate. Depending on the situation, one may be easier to use than the other. If you could use both and switch between them, that would be handy, wouldn’t it?

男女のお風呂が分かれていても、上の空間がつながっているときには、声が聞こえるから音声言語で会話ができるんだ。片方から声をかけてもう一方へ石鹸を投げるシーンが昔の漫画にはよくあったよ。でも手話言語で話そうとすると裸が見えちゃうね。
The room above the men’s and women’s bathing areas is sometimes connected, in which case we can hear each other and have a conversation in spoken language. 学校の校庭に散らばって遊んでいる子供たち。そろそろ授業が始まるから集合してほしいんだけど。音声言語なら拡声器を使って声が届けば聞こえるけれど、手話言語の場合には、こっちを向いていてくれないと話しかけても見てもらえない。

大型スーパーで手分けして買い物。でも、これとあれと、どっちが必要なのかがわからない。こっちを見てさえくれれば、手話なら相談できる。音声言語だと、大声を出しても聞こえないし、聞こえたとしても他のお客さんを驚かせちゃって無理。
We split up to go shopping in the big supermarket, but I’m not sure which product to buy. If the other person just happened to look at me, I could ask in a sign language. But in a spoken language, even shouting, my voice probably wouldn’t get through, and even if it did, I’d be afraid of disturbing the other shoppers, so it’s not possible.
