Spoken language speakers use their vocal cords to produce speech, but those who have undergone total laryngectomy due to laryngeal or esophageal cancer have lost their vocal cords and their voice completely. One method of regaining voice is the esophageal vocalization method, in which part of the mucous membrane of the esophagus is made to vibrate like the vocal cords to produce voice.

In “Me and My Language”: TAKEUCHI Yasuko uses esophageal vocalization for conversation. In addition to her work, she is actively involved in esophageal vocalization training.
