3歳時に失聴。中学三年次まで一般校で学び、高校でろう学校に転入しました。大学一年の時に人工内耳を埋込みました。人工内耳装用児者にとって、手話は音声言語以上に精神的な安定をもたらす言語であると信じ、現在、ろう学校主任教諭として教育活動を実践しています。

I lost my hearing at the age of three. I was educated in a general school until the third year of junior high and then transferred to a high school for the deaf. I received a cochlear implant when I was a freshman in college. I believe that sign language provides more emotional stability than spoken language for children with cochlear implants, and I am currently teaching in a school for the deaf as a head teacher to put this belief into practice.

手話も日本語も、これまでそこまで意識をしたことがなかったワタクシ。けれど、何のために日本語を!?何のために手話を!?となったとき、単純に「自分が自分であるための最大で最高の武器」が手話でもあり、日本語でもある、ってことを“発見”した。ことばのもつ大胆さはその人の性格にも現れる、っていうものだから、我が子へのチチから子へのことばのシンフォニーを考えていかなくちゃ、って。
I have never been that aware of sign language or Japanese before. But when I think about “what is Japanese for?” and “what is sign language for?”, I “discovered” that “the greatest and best weapon to be oneself” is both sign language and Japanese. The boldness of languages can be seen in a person’s character, so I had to think of a symphony of languages from father to children.
