日常、当たり前のように使っているコトバ。けれども、ヒトは生まれた瞬間からコトバが使えるわけではありません。声を出したり指の動きをコントロールする運動機能、自他の区別や人とやりとりをする社会的な力、意味の理解や思考、組み合わせをする認知能力などに支えられて、はじめてコトバを操ることができるようになります。ヒトが一生を通してどのようにコトバを身につけ更新してゆくのか、そのプロセスを感じたり、試したりしてみましょう。

Language Acquisition
We use language and live our everyday life. Using language feels obvious because we can speak and understand our first languages almost without any conscious effort. However, we did not use the language from the moment we were born. So how did we learn the language?
To approach this question, we will first need to know that there is a range of different aspects to being a language speaker. These aspects include understanding word meanings and sentences, producing speech sound fluently, and communicating with others using words, for example.
In this section, we will first look at our knowledge and abilities about language. We will then explore how we acquire this knowledge and skills. Several examples of first language acquisition will illustrate the research outcome as well as their study methods. Let’s explore the process of human language acquisition by feeling, observing, and trying out our own language.
