The Communication Chain is a simplified diagram of the process by which an ‘idea’ is transmitted from the brain of the speaker or signer to the brain of the receiver. Whether spoken, signed or tactile language is used, the starting and ending points – brain to brain – are the same. On the other hand, different types of signals are used to communicate “what you want to say” and the body organs used to produce the signals are also different. When we use different types of language, like audio, visual, and tactile, we call it “different modes.”
