複数の言語が相互に影響を及ぼし合うことを言語接触といいます。日本語には英語から「メール」や「パソコン」、日本語から英語へは「マンガ」や「ツナミ」など入り、使われるようになりました。単語だけでなく、発音や文法が大きく変わったり、言語全体が置き換わってしまうこともあります。また、書記法を通して言語が影響を受けることもあります。

The mutual influence of two or more languages is known as language contact. Words such as meeru from the English word “mail” and paso-kon from the English word “perso(nal) com(puter)” entered the Japanese language, while words such as “manga” and “tsunami” entered English from Japanese. In addition to words, there are also cases where pronunciation and grammar have changed significantly, or where entire languages have been replaced. There are also cases where languages are influenced by writing systems.
