- 人間のように言葉を操るAIの研究をしています。 人間の脳が言葉を処理している様子は観測できませんが、 Alなら観測できます。 そこで、Alの処理過程を解析することで、 人間の直感的な判断を説明できないかと考えています。 例えば、 人間が英語の母語話者と第2言語話者の書いたテキストに長年さらされると、「このテキストは母語話者らしい」といった直感を獲得しますが、 どうしてそう感じたかを必ずしも説明できません。 一方、 Alにこの2種類のテキストを見分けさせ、 その振る舞いを数学的に解析すれば、 具体的にどの表現が母語話者に特徴的なのかを特定できます。 この手法を使うと、 例えば、 sit out a bit という表現は簡単な単語の組み合わせですが、第2言語話者には使いづらいことがわかります。母語話者っぽい母語話者っぽいどうしてそう感じたの?に着目したんだね!

- I am working on Al, with the goal to give it a human-level ability in language. While we cannot observe how the human brain processes language, we can do for Al. My basic idea is to explain human intuitive judgments by analyzing Al's internal process. For example, long-term exposure to texts written by native and second language speakers of English gives humans a sense of native-likeness of texts, but they have trouble explaining why they feel that way. In contrast, we can identify expressions characteristic of native speakers by letting Al contrast two types of texts and mathematically analyzing its internal process. With this method, the expression "sit out a bit", for example, turns out to be difficult for second language speakers even though it consists of basic words.
