人は文字を読もうと意識していなくても、知っている単語であれば、ことばを目にした瞬間、脳内で自動的に文字の認識や意味の処理を行います。そのため、単語の意味と文字の色が異なる場合には、同じ場合と比べて文字の色を言うのが遅れます。これは、単語の意味情報と文字の色情報の処理が干渉するために生じる現象で、ストループ効果と呼ばれています。

Even if a person is not consciously trying to read a written word, if it is a word you know, the moment you see it, your brain automatically recognizes it and processes its meaning. If you see a word written with letters or script in a certain color, it would take you longer to name the color than if the meaning and the color did not match. This phenomenon is caused by interference between the processing of word meaning information and letter color information and is known as the Stroop effect.
