I grew up speaking only Okinawan until I entered elementary school. Until high school graduation, I used Japanese at school and Okinawan at home. I began binge-reading books in Japanese around the time I was in the second grade of elementary school. After college, I used Okinawan only occasionally, but after my retirement, from the age of 65, opportunities to teach Okinawan started to increase.
The Ryukyuan languages are rarely heard in daily life anymore. However, there are many older people who understand them and miss them. When I was a child, I heard mostly Shuri and Naha conversations of people born in the Meiji era. Looking back on it now, I realize that it was spoken in a relaxed manner, with a blend of respect and friendliness. When people say that language is a part of culture, it is because language, together with facial expressions, gestures, atmosphere, and the tempo of speech, creates a relationship between people. I think that culture without words, such as music and dance, can be positioned as an extension of such culture.
