ヒトの言語を操るには、「形（音声や視覚シグナル）」と「意味」を、階層的な構造を通してつなぐ能力を必要とします。複数の階層を組み合わせて操る能力は、人間だけのものとなっています。しかし、これらの階層のうちひとつひとつについては、他の動物たちも似たような仕組みを持ち、使っていることが明らかになってきています。

Manipulating human language requires the ability to link “form” (audio and visual signals) and “meaning” through hierarchical structures. The ability to manipulate multiple hierarchies in combination is unique to humans. However, when it comes to each level of these hierarchies, it is becoming clear that other animals have and use similar mechanisms.
