同じ言語を話すヒトが離れて暮らすようになると、それぞれの地域でだんだん言語が変化してゆき、最後はとても違ったものになります。ここでは、過去300年の英語とフランス手話の分岐をみてみましょう。いずれの言語も、３世紀の間にとても多くの地域に拡散し、どんどん新しい変種が生まれたことがわかります。

When people who speak the same language start to live apart, the language in each region gradually changes and eventually becomes very different. Let’s take a look at the divergence of English and French Sign Language over the last 300 years. You can see that both languages have spread to many regions over the last three centuries, and that new variants have emerged.
