Sign languages are influenced by the different visual representations of the spoken language(s) used in the same area. In the case of Japanese Sign Language, new expressions are sometimes created from the finger spelling of Japanese syllables, written Japanese and signed Japanese. In social activities it is not uncommon for the sign languages used in the Deaf community to come into contact with the local spoken language through its signed representations. Learning signers sometimes use a variety called “intermediate signing” which is influenced by their first (spoken) languages.
