How do you say “shi-chi-ga-tsu”, the Japanese word for July? Some Japanese speakers say “hichigatsu” and some say “shichigatsu”. Others may pronounce it “sutsugatsu. The difference between “hi”, “shi”, and “su” is all due to differences in the fine movements of the tip of the tongue. Both consonant and vowel differences are expressed by the slightest difference in mouth shape and tongue position. This can be physically reproduced with a device like the one in the pictures.
