耳で聞く機能がうまく働かないことを聴覚障害といいます。生まれつき、全く聞こえない人もいますし、少しだけ音が聞こえるけれども、言語を聞き取るのは困難な場合もあります。また病気や高齢のために聞こえなくなったり、聞こえづらくなったりすることもあります。

The inability to hear due to damage to the ear is called hearing impairment. Some people are born with no hearing at all, while others may hear some sound but have difficulty comprehending speech. Some may lose their hearing or become hard-of-hearing as they grow old, or as a result of certain illness.
