幼稚園の先生になろうと思っていましたが、失聴をきっかけに手話を使うようになりました。JTBでろうのツアーコンダクターを務めた後、英国の手話言語学研究所で勉強をし、現在は、国立民族学博物館で特任助教として手話言語学の研究をしています。

I was going to be a kindergarten teacher, but my hearing loss led me to use sign language. After working as a deaf tour conductor in Japan for JTB (Japan Travel Bureau), I studied at the Institute of Sign Language Linguistics in the U.K. and now I am working at the National Museum of Ethnology as a project assistant professor, conducting research in sign language linguistics.

「聞こえない人」と言ってもひとりひとり言語環境が異なるので、「言語ヒストリー」を通して国内で実際に使われている言語の多様性を具体的に知ってもらえる、または興味をもってもらえる機会になったら良いと思います。中途失聴については、「大変だね」というネガティブなイメージではなく、「途中から聞こえなくなったことがきっかけで言語の世界が広がったんだね」というポジティブなメッセージが伝わったら嬉しいです。
Since each person who is “deaf” has a different language environment, I hope that the “Language History” will be an opportunity for people to learn about the diversity of languages actually used in Japan and to become interested in them. When it comes to post-lingual deafness, I hope that people will not have a negative image of it as a “hardship”, and the positive message of “post-lingual deafness has opened up the world of languages” could be conveyed.
