As with spoken languages, language contact occurs in sign languages in various aspects such as phonology, vocabulary, grammar and pragmatics. There are examples of borrowing from American Sign Language to Japanese Sign Language and vice versa. Also, unlike spoken languages, schools play a major role in language inheritance, so when a teacher from another region comes into the educational environment, the sign language they use can have a significant impact on the local sign language.
