文は、文字通りの意味とは異なる意味を伝えることもあります。「今日は暑いよ！」は、（「釣りに行かない？」に対して）「やめておこう」、（「窓開けたままでいいよね？」に対して）「冷房いれようよ」などの意味になります。文字通りの意味だけで文を解釈すると、相手の意図が理解できないこともあります。
A sentence can convey a meaning other than its literal meaning. “It’s hot today!” can mean “Let’s not” (in response to “Do you want to go fishing?”), “Let’s turn on the air conditioning!” (in response to “Shall we leave the windows open?”) If you interpret a sentence only by its literal meaning, you may not understand the other person’s intention.
