日本語でi-n-uという音の連続が動物の「犬」という意味を持つように、言語では、「形」のひとつひとつに「意味」が結び付いています。「形」と「意味」を結びつけることで、言語の構造の土台となる「語」ができます。手話言語では手や上半身の形や動きの組み合わせが、ここでいう「形」であり、意味と結びついています。

In languages, each “form” is associated with a “meaning”, just as the sound sequence i-n-u in Japanese is associated with the animal “dog” as its meaning. The combination of “form” and “meaning” is what makes up a “word”, which is one of the foundations of language. In sign languages, “form” is a combination of the shape and movement of the hands and upper body.
