- 私は言語学者で、 人間の脳について知るため言語を研究しています。 1980年代にニカラグアで生まれた手話を発見し、初めて記録したことが一番の研究業績です。 この研究は、 言語学や心理学の入門講座で取り上げられています。 私の学生もニカラグアに行ったり、 研究に参加することもあります。 現在、 言語の発生に焦点を当てて研究をしています。 例えば、 (1) ジェスチャーと言語の比較対照 (特に言語特有の階層的プロセスについて (2) 手話と口語の言語構造 (3) 脳卒中や変性疾患の結果、 言語がどのように損なわれるか (4) 言語を失った人々のコミュニケーションシステム、 そしてそのような人々のコミュニケーションのために利用できる手段とは何なのか、などです。 私はこれまで国立の科学財団や保健研究所から助成金を受け、 研究責任者を務めてきました。現在、大学ではニカラグアでの数十年にわたる研究データのデジタル化とアーカイブ化に努めています。

- Current Research Interest
- I am a linguist, which means that I use language as a laboratory for the study of the human brain. I am best known for having discovered, and documented for the first time, a signed language that emerged in Nicaragua in the 1980s. This work is cited in most introductory linguistics and psychology courses. I have taken several students with me to Nicaragua to participate in my research, while others have worked on studies here. Currently, several prongs of my research focus on language emergence, including (1) comparison and contrast of gesture vs. language (particularly regarding hierarchical processes specific to language), (2) the linguistic structure of signed and spoken languages, (3) how language breaks down as the result of strokes or degenerative diseases, and (4) the communication systems of individuals severely deprived of language and what means are available for the communication habilitation of such individuals. I have served as the principal investigator on grants from both the National Science Foundation, the National Institutes of Health. Currently I am working to digitize and archive my data from decades of study in Nicaragua.
