ヒトの言語の特徴とは、何なのでしょうか？ どうして言語を使うと「伝わる」のでしょうか？ 世界には音声言語および手話言語を含むたくさんの言語が話されています。言語と他のコミュニケーション方法との違い、言語を使って伝えることのできる仕組み、そしてヒトと動物のコミュニケーションの違いを見ることで、その答えをさがしてみましょう。

What are the characteristics of human language? Why can we communicate through language? There are many languages used in the world, including spoken and signed languages. Let’s find the answers by looking at the differences between language and other methods of communication, the mechanisms that allow us to communicate using language, and the differences between human and animal communication.

言語には、同じ言語から分岐したことがわかるものがあり、語族と呼びます。ここでは音声言語のうち、第一言語話者の数が多いものから順に、六つの語族の分布を示してみました。1996年の「世界言語権宣言」では、「すべての言語は集団的帰属意識の表現である」と規定されていますが、その40%が絶滅の危機に瀕しています。
We know that some languages have diverged from the same origin, and such languages are called a language family. Here, we present six language families with the largest number of first-language speakers among all spoken languages. The 1996 “Universal Declaration on Linguistic Rights” stipulates that “all languages are an expression of group consciousness”, yet 40% of languages are facing extinction.

手話言語は、聴覚障がい者が、第一言語として身につけ、言語能力の基盤を築く大切な言語です。世界で400種類以上あり、国や地域によっては公用語のひとつとなっています。ここでは手話言語のうち、六つの語族の分布を示してみました。発達経緯が音声言語とは異なることが見ていただけると思います。
Sign language is an important language hearing-impaired people acquire as their first language, building the foundation of language skills. There are over 400 types of sign languages in the world, and in some countries and areas, sign language is one of the official languages. Here, we present the distribution of six sign language families. You can see that their path of development is different from spoken languages.
